Well the last of the Pennant Divisions, the Emily Hurt Shield, was completed on Friday 19th July 2019.      It was held at the Murrumbidgee Country Club at 9.30 am and as you can tell by the clothing it was ‘chilly’ to say the least. The Teams, Yowani and Royal Canberra, gathered to prepare for battle with Yowani having the added pressure of defending their title from 2018.  Emily Hurt was also present to wish the teams well and see the players hit off the first tee.  The battle began! and the players were very evenly matched with handicaps ranging from 34 to 41.  Two matches were convincingly won, one to Yowani, one to Royal.  Two more matches were much tighter again with one to Yowani and one to Royal.  Now here is where it gets exciting.  The fourth match between Fran and Denise was very tight with Royal going up the 18th 1 up.  ‘No pressure’!  Fran rather than buckling at the intensity, ‘grew another leg’ and found herself on the green for three with a amazing shot over the edge of the bunker.  Denise unfortunately placed her ball in the bunker and so it resulted in a loss.  All square.  The girls happily shook hands and said a square was a good result.  When advised the teams were all square and that they had to go down the 19th hole their faces told the story.  So down the 19th hole we go with a huge gallery in tow, Fran again keeping her mettle and once more being on the green with three very steady shots.  The Royal player unfortunately could not match this resulting in Yowani winning.  A great tussle between the teams and very evenly matched.  All of the Royal players had never played pennant before so this was a great result for their team.  Great to see new players to the Emily Hurt Shield which is what this Division was designed to facilitate.  Good golfing Ladies!
